I need to get a playstation 3 but I can’t decide between a 40 gb or an 80 gb. Are either of them compatible with the ps2 games? I need to get one on time for the new gta game. Please help and thanks in advance!

Ok so the 40gb cant play PS2 games, but the 20, 60 and 80gb can. I have an 80gb.

Well some people might say the 40gb is the same as the rest. Well the right answer is NO!
The 40gb is like the “stripped down” version of the PS3. Yes, it is a PS3, but just with less features. Ill start with the crappy cons 1st, just to get it over with. So the 40gb, CANNOT, and i repeat, CANNOT play PS2 games, even with an update. So if you have some cool ps2 games you want to play, you cant play it with the 40gb. Only has 2 USB ports, so if your’e gunna use it for ipods, memory or some sort, you’re out of luck. No memory card readers, so if you wanna plug in a pro duo from a psp, or a SD for photos, you’re out of luck again.
Cons:
- This PS3 is the stripped down model:
- Only has 2 USB instead of 4.
- NO PS2 COMPATIBILTY!!
- No memory card readers
- Only a 40gb.
Ok, so i said ONLY a 40gb. Well you can always change your harddrive to something bigger, so it’s possible to even have a 1TB (1000GB) PS3. All you need is any 2.5″ serial ATA Harddrive running at 5200RPM. Best part is that it wont void the warranty. Now you may be thinking, “wth man, this 40gb sucks!” Well here are some pros!
Pros:
- It’s a new, 7th gen playstation 3.
- It has HD graphics, it will amaze you with it’s 1080p glory. (Yes, it has over 2 million pixels; more than your eyes)
- Great games, and some exclusives coming out like tekken, MGS4 and so forth.
- The cheapest blu ray player you can find as of right now. You can also play games! woot! Blu ray already won the format war, so buy one.
- PS3 Home is coming soon. Home is an online community, where other ps3 people chat and stuff. You can create an avatar, chat, play games, have achivements etc. Soon, it will be better than xbox live!
- Best console in my p.o.v
I hoped i helped, and dont forget to choose best answer. If you’re wondering, i would get a 60 or 80gb BECAUSE of the PS2 backwards compatibilitys. Keep in mind that the 60gb is out of production, and can play all of the ps2 games. The 80gb is out for now, but returning in the summer with MGS4 and a DUALSHOCK3. It can play most. But thte update 2.10 enabled it to play all.
So yea, dont forget to choose a best answer!
The 40 gb cannot and will not play any PS2 game disks. In the future, Sony might make PS2 games downloadable on the PSN.
The 80 gb can play most PS2 games.
You can go here and enter the PS2 game and see if there’s any major problems:http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/Co…
Get the 80 gb if you want to play PS2 games on the PS3.
Well the best console is the 60 gig but sony has discontinue the 60 gig version you could get one from a game stop. But between the 40 and 80 gig version you would want to get a 80 gig version because it allows you to play SOME NOT ALL OF YOUR PS2 GAMES. Here a link to insert the game title and inform you whether or not it will work on the 80 gig version…good luck and congrats on getting a ps3.
The 20,60,80 gb ps3’s are compatible with ps2 games. The 20 and 60 more so because of the hardware compatibility but they were discontinued about a year ago so most of the 20,60s out there are used and refurbished however the 80gb uses software
compatibility so it plays about 80% of ps2 games and they were just recently discontinued but you can still find them in stores till those dry up. The 40 GB IS NOT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE WARNING.oh and the 20gb doesn’t have wifi. personally I’d go ahead and get an 80gb before they dry up!
40gb- no flash card reader, no super audio cd support, two usb ports, and no support on ps2 games, because sony removed the hardware and software chip to play ps2 games.
80gb- have flash card reader, have super audio cd support, four usb ports, and 80% support on ps2 games, because sony removed the hardware chip and keep the software one. they are using software emulation, which means most of the ps2 games will work, but a few games will have some problems.
both models have wifi, support ps1 games on software emulation, play cd, dvd, and blu-ray, play ps3 games, and etc.
Only 80gb can, not 40gb
Get the 80gb , you’ll need all the room you can get I bought a 20gb first then ran out of room.
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2’s CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2’s GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim. Not manufactured anymore.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2’s GPU). Around 60-70% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can’t play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black, silver and white colors. White and silver versions are on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption, other versions use 90nm). Improved cooling system. It’s the latest version. 40GB doesn’t support SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc). Has no chrome trim.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2’s GPU). Around 60-70% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.
They are all based on Blu-ray. They all play PS1 games. Apart from the differences listed above - they are the same.
Only the 80gb, the 40gb does not play Ps2 games
