I Have A Theory About How People Understand Violence In Video Games, Is There Already Research On This?

by GamePlay on February 4, 2010

It is my thought that teenagers who play violent video games (such as Halo, Call of Duty, or Grand Theft Auto) do not view the violence in those games as “real violence”. That is, they categorize the violence in video games as different than real world violence. Has any research been done on this that supports or refutes this idea?

Well, seeing as Halo isn’t real, then it’s my guess that it is a pretty solid fact that nothing in Halo is real. I suppose that includes the multicolored interactive polygons you pretend to shoot with pretend guns too. Oblivion on the other hand has been said to have serious influence on religion and culture all around the world.

I’m not sure if any official research has been done but I know a few people at the University of Michigan that did studies on this for an independent research type thing.
