Nowadays the only kind of Playstation 3 you can get from Best Buy or Wal Mart, etc. are the 40 GB ones.
I was wondering are they backwards compatible with PS 1 and PS 2? Because I read somewhere that they are not…I was wondering is there a software update you can download from Sony that makes it compatible?

40GB PS3s are compatible with PS1 games, not PS2. Trust me, I know, I own one and I’ve played Final Fantasy 7 & Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 on it.
There will never be software updates that will enable the 40GB PS3s to play PS2 games because Sony took out a piece of hardware that enabled PS2 games to be played.

Unfortunately, they aren’t. There’s also the 80 GB version at Walmart and Best Buy, but they too aren’t backward compatible. Sony has intended in making the PS3s cheaper. No worries…
