No, they did not include the hardware required to play PS2 games in the 40 gb system, so it is impossible and it won’t ever be possible through any kind of software updates or modification.
I believe work arounds for this are already in the making . You might want to keep your eye on the Boot Loaders.
As of now there is no official work arounds yet… but do expect some before the year ends.

as of right now, there is no way to do it. only the 80 gig can play ps2 games. i think they’re working on it now though.
