Now That The Canadian Dollar=american Dollar, Will We Pay What They Pay For Books, Video Games, Etc?

by GamePlay on February 16, 2010

I hate having to pay the Canadian price for a book- its usually around $10 higher. Also video games. Video games are $10 higher here in Canada. I always assumed this was because of the currency exchange. Now that it is equal, will we get to pay the same price the Americans do? If so, how long will it take for all this change to take?

What should happen, seldom does, and we will continue to pay the higher prices for a long time.

Thank the Commies running your nation. Prices are even higher in Commie Europe.

Likely you will continue to keep paying the high prices

Nope- you gotta pay what you’ve been paying until it get’s changed. They’ll use the excuse that the money has always been unstable all the while sucking your wallet like lampreys. Try getting American currency and paying the exchange fees it will probably be less.

I wouldn’t hold your breathe. The Canadian dollar has been worth a fair bit for awhile now, and was close to parity 2-3 years ago and none of the prices changed -particularly on books where it is the most noticeable.
The Chapters/Indigo monopoly on books just replies that many of the books were bought when the Canadian dollar was low and they can’t just go to US prices. However this is BS Chapters doesn’t keep old stock -they mark it down and get rid of it. Or they SEND IT BACK, novels in particular often only the covers must be returned, thats why there is that little notice in the front of all novels asking you to call the publisher if you bought the book without the cover.
You should also know the minimum mark-up on books is 40% and most of the time Chapters/Indigo gets closer to 60. I was working for a smaller book seller last time the dollar was close and they sent most of their stock back, and reordered it. It was cheaper to return the books and pay the new prices.
