4 Stars Spectacular Fun!
I admit I wasn’t sure how well Pure would transform on the Playstation 3 with it not using the full potential of the PS3′s High Definition (HD) capabilities but although this game is 720p – it still looks pretty amazing! The graphics are exceptional; the environments are breathtaking and even when there is a lot happening on screen everything runs very smooth. The sound is also great too; it is Dolby Digital 5.1 and has a superb soundtrack with Rock/Alternative artists such as Jeff Beck, The Futureheads and Wolfmother
The game itself is built around a system which rewards you for performing tricks (a possible 80 different ones) by giving you `boost’. To do the tricks is simple – you just push a button and a direction when you are in the air. The more of a risk you take by staying in the air longer and doing the extra complex tricks – the better rewards you get. You can then use the boost you get to go faster during the race.
The element of risk when doing the tricks is really what makes the game a lot of fun. When you succeed it is exhilarating and the tricks look spectacular. If you fail, it is heartbreaking and you go smashing into the ground! Either way it is a blast!
The race side of the game is adrenaline-rushed and high speed so it keeps you on your toes all the time!
The tracks themselves (30 in total) offer a lot of variety with everything from a airplane graveyard to coastal landscapes. The tracks also have alternate routes so if you take a chance to discover (even if it is by accident) then you could take minutes off your time.
The only downside I felt with the game is its lack of originality. Most of what happens in this game has been done before in other racing games. I will however state that this game tries it’s best to make up for this with the special attention it gives to every detail.
I would say the standard game is moderately difficult overall but online play is a different thing entirely and really tough! You play against a potential of up to 16 players and although this is a new game you would be surprised at some of the unreal tricks and fast times some of these players are already doing!
Final Conclusion – I enjoyed playing this game, the action is intense and even if you are not an expert at these type of games, the game is very rewarding because the trick system is straightforward so you can get into it really fast. The graphics and sound are both excellent.
4 Stars Good Stuff – I could see how this could be addicting!
I haven’t played many video games outside the music or golf offerings in years. So my view of what is “cool” or “cutting edge” might be a little dated, but this game seemed pretty damned cool. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but before long I was flipping my ATV (on purpose) during a mid-air trick.
Like most games, there is a progression of race courses and ATV equipment and courses to unlock as you improve. Since I know absolutely nothing about the parts of an ATV, building one was interesting and even a little (very little?) educational. I now know I prefer Freestyle to Racing and I am better on sand than dirt – who knew? This adding of equipment and courses can suck you in for hours more than you planned on playing.
Overall, it is fun and as you get better, the trick possibilities seem to be endless. I went to 4 stars instead of 5 because it’s not completely up my alley and I can see a time where the premise might get a little old. Then again, I’m not competing against others so this might be fun as a competition. If you are into ATVs, racing or virtually soaring through the air – this will surely entertain you.
5 Stars Great Arcade-style Racing!
Don’t get me wrong… I love Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and Need for Speed: Undercover. But sometimes, you just want to pick up your controller, race around for a few minutes, and be done.
Pure is that kind of game. The controls aren’t nearly as refined as GT or NFS, but they’re a snap to learn, and you can figure out enough to get you through 90% of the game in just under five minutes.
Building your own ATV from the ground up is a lot of fun, and probably designed more for ATV enthusiasts than casual gamers. I liked it a lot, but I’m sure someone more familiar with ATV’s could build much better machines than I’m coming up with.
The graphics are phenomenal, and the load times are very reasonable for a game this detailed. This is probably the most fun I’ve had with an arcade racer since Splashdown for the original Xbox. (Yes, I know I’m writing about the PS3 version of Pure.)
4 Stars Very good game
I’d heard great things about Pure and I do have to say that this game is a blast to play. Controls are overall responsive, tricks are fun to pull off, and your wipeout recovery is forgiving enough to keep the fun going. That said, don’t expect any groundbreaking new angle here to make this title stand out.
I also haven’t seen the point of the Special tricks, since your only reward for tricks is “boost”, yet Special tricks (which are hard to pull off) aren’t even allowed unless you ALREADY have a full boost meter. So what gives?? For such an encouraged game element, I actually found it easier to stick with the simpler tricks to avoid wiping out and win most races.
These things aside, Pure does offer customized quads, online play, tons of tracks, challenges, characters to choose and more, so you’re sure to have fun and enjoy good replay value either way.
4 Stars 3.5 stars from a twitch gamer
I’ll cut to the chase: Pure is a fun game, even though I usually don’t play extreme sports or technical driving games.
Look, I’m long past my teen years. I grew up slamming the single red button on my Atari 2600 joystick and winning free ships in games that rewarded fast reflexes. This means I’m not too good at doing complex button combos (that means YOU, Heavenly Sword) and I don’t have much patience for configuring a racecar with 500 separate components (sorry, Gran Turismo).
Pure strikes a good balance between casual simplicity and hardcore complexity. People like me can get started and slam through a few races without much hassle, while gamers who want to tweak every little thing have the ability to do so. I like how it’s possible to play without having to earn “licenses” or pass skill tests. All too often, driving games force players to go through a lengthy training period which, in my opinion, is a major drag.
Additional thoughts:
*Good graphics–tracks contain lots of details and areas to explore, all in stunning physical settings.
*Online play isn’t as fun for the casual player as the offline races because most people online have fully upgraded and tricked out ATV’s.
*If you have an HD TV, the game runs at 720p resolution (I’m ready for more 1080p games!).
*Rumble and SixAxis motion sensing are supported by Pure.
.
All in all, Pure is a decent game. Anybody who wishes that skateboard/snowboard/BMX style tricks were possible in Motorstorm probably will dig Pure.
