My son wants one for his birthday and that is the only thing he is getting… What is the difference between the two consoles?

Is that in Canadian dollars because the US doesn’t have a 300 buck PS3. There is a 400 and 500 buck PS3.
Whatever the price is, I guess you’re looking at the 40 gb and the 80 gb PS3.
The 40 gb cannot play PS2 games while the 80 gb can play PS2 games. They both can play PSX games. It also only have 2 USB ports instead of 4 on the 80 gb. It doesn’t have any flash drives (CF, SD, Memory Stick), while the 80 gb has those.
For the record, all PS3 can go on the net.

The 80gb (400$) has more memory, you can play PS2 games on it, and has card slots and 4 usb ports.
The 40gb(300$) has less memory, you CAN’T play PS2 games, it has No card slots and it only has 2 USB ports.
But I still bought the 40gb because a PS3 is a PS3.

what superdork said is right. the lowest price for the ps3 is $399. the 500 is 80 gigs which holds more space, and the 400 one is 40 gigs. ask ur son which one he wants. 40 gig would be good but it doesnt play ps2 games if ur son has ps2 games

1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2′s CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2′s GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim. Not manufactured anymore.
3). 80GB – extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2′s GPU). Around 60-70% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB – can’t play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It’s the latest version. 40GB doesn’t support SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc).
5). PAL 60GB – reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2′s GPU). Around 60-70% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.
They are all based on Blu-ray. They all play PS1 games.

Well right now there is the 40gb and the 80gb models. The only difference between the two models is that the 40gb model has half the memory of the 80gb model, doesn’t have a backward compatibility (meaning he cannot play old PS2 games on it), and doesnt have memory card slots (which are basically slots to put memory chips from cameras and other devices to upload movies, pics, etc.) Also the 40gb model only has 2 usb ports.
If your kid has a PS2 and is willing to put music, pictures, movies, whatever…I would get him the 80gb. Otherwise, I would get him the 40gb if he is just into it for the PS3 games and Blu-ray capabilities.
