I can get a Sony Blue ray player for $399. and they have one for about $500. So why a Playstation 3 vs. Stand-alone for Blue Ray Movies?

Let’s forget about the ps3′s ability to play games, surf the web, and play music, for now. Let’s just look at it as another blu-ray player.
Now the reason to get a ps3 over a blu-ray player is because the ps3 is able to be updated while a blu-ray player is not. Currently, there are only 2 types of blu-ray players that have the current blu-ray techonology (BD live), and they both cost you a pretty penny. While the ps3 when first released, did not have this BD live, it was updated and now it DOES have BD live.
That’s the main reason why you should get one.
Because, if you’re into video games or want to be able to access the internet or view and listen to media on one device that also does blu-ray, I’d have to say it’s an incredible bargain, even though personally I’m not a fan of Sony.
Plus the reason why the prices are so similar is because blu-ray is still new and expensive and the PS3s price was lowered from its actual retail value so customers would actually buy it. (Most people are more used to buying $200-$250 game systems, not $900 ones, so they dropped the price as low as they could go).
But if you actually want a video game system also..I’d stick with a Wii if you’re new, or an Xbox 360 if you live in the states and are an old vet so to speak. Otherwise get the PS3 or stick with a PC if you want.
Because when the PS3 was released, it was only 500/600 bucks (20 gb/60 gb) while a Blu-ray player was 1000 bucks. It was cheaper back then to get a PS3 than to get a Blu-ray player.
The reason people are choosing the PS3 over Blu-ray player is that the PS3 can do more things than a Blu-ray player for around the same price. The PS3 can be used to watch movies (Blu-ray and DVD)and play video games. A Blu-ray player can only be used to watch movies (Blu-ray and DVD). You can surf the web with the PS3. You can’t surf the web with a Blu-ray player. The PS3 can be used to help find a cure for diseases, while the Blu-ray player can’t.
because it does more than play BD-ROM movies. it surfs the Internet provided that you have a fast internet connection, it plays music, it plays downloaded videos (avi/divx, mpeg, avc), you can store pictures and view them on your tv, and of course… it plays PS3 games where online gaming is completely free.
besides, the PS3 is the most stable Blu-Ray player in the market today. the $101 difference is worth it.
Well, the obvious is you could look at it as getting a gaming system for free built in to the player! Also PS3 always has updates for software which is harder to do on a standalone. Also ps3 has full 1080p and hdmi so you wouldn’t get any better quality form the standalone.
PS3 is one of few blu-ray players the can be updated. So you can pay 400 for a player if you want, but technology always changes and you want a player that can accommodate that.
Because you can play blu-ray games on a playstation 3, you can only watch blu-ray movies on a blu-ray disc player.
The PS3 is better (in my book) because it can play games. If you just want the blu ray player there’s no reason to get a PS3.
