My 80gb ps3 can not play ps2 games, and you can’t download ps2 games from the playstation store, so why is my ps3 capable of creating a ps2 memory card utility?

You probably have a newer version of the 80gb ps3, not the one that came out in 2006 Wich supported ps2 games. You can create ps3 memory cards because it’s a free software that you can download trough the ps store. But don’t worry, Sony is coming out with a firmware update that will allow us to play our ps2 games.

Because your PS3 plays PS1 games and the PS3 uses that same feature for PS1 memory cards.
